Sociology of Globalization (COLQ 2993)

Fall 2012 will be the first time Sociology of Globalization will be offered.  Globalization has created a smaller world.  Evidence of globalization abounds with the advent of the internet, cable television, and cell phones.  The flow of information across and within countries has increased, even from remote areas. Popular culture has gone international.  Disney can be found outside of Paris and Hong Kong, and Pokemon and Sudoku are now favorite American pastimes.  While the diffusion of information and popular culture are relatively benign social changes, globalization has heightened the unequal distribution of power and subsequent poverty. During this class students will learn about the sociology of globalization by actively engaging in the Global Justice Game.  The game consists of several scenarios and players work as teams, such as the World Trade Organization or a local government, to solve a current problem.   The game will be a fun and meaningful learning experience teaching critical learning skills by simulating real-world dynamics that address economic globalization, the global justice movement, and broader sociological questions.  Syllabus forthcoming
