About Me

I love teaching!  I enjoy the small class size of Gordon College which allows me to directly interact with students challenging them to use their Sociological Imagination.  My goal is for students to finish the semester with a basic understanding of sociology and more importantly to experience an improvement in their academic skills preparing them for future study.

As a researcher, my agenda focuses on integrating agency and structure and is defined by an interest in globalization.  My dissertation examined how political context differentially influences why people work and included women and men from 12 countries in the Global North.  My research lays the groundwork for the continued study of the connection between a country’s family and child policies, the structure of the society, and how individuals experience work.

I have completed 3 degrees all in Sociology with teaching experience in Texas, Colorado, Mississippi, and Georgia.  I received a Bachelor of Arts with a major in sociology and minor in psychology from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas in 1990.  While teaching part-time at South Plains Junior College, I was a full-time student at Texas Tech University graduating in 1995 with a Masters of Art with a specialization in the Sociology of Religion.  After completing my master’s degree, I spent 1 year teaching full-time at Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi then 6 years as a full-time instructor at Hinds Community College teaching on the Jackson and Pearl campus.  I fully enjoyed my years as a community college instructor, but I felt a Ph.D was necessary for job security, to improve my teaching and knowledge base in the classroom, and personal fulfillment.  I completed my doctorate with a specialization in Comparative Family and Gender Studies from Mississippi State University in Starkville, Mississippi in December 2011 (dissertation was defended December 8, 2011, but my degree was conferred May 2012).

Personally, my life centers around my family.  I have been married to my husband for over twenty years who has patiently waited for me to complete my education.  My evenings and weekends are spent playing the role of soccer mom, cook, and chauffeur to a teenage daughter and son.  As a family our favorite activities consist of sports, the outdoors, and the arts.
