YOU WILL BE DROPPED FROM THE COURSE IF YOU HAVE NOT DONE THE ORIENTATION SLIDE SHOW BY AUGUST 18.

Textbook: Vistas edition 4; ISBN 978-1-61767-057-2 (although any edition you can get your hands on is fine)

REQUIRED Meeting Dates (for testing): September 1 (the original listing was Sept. 2, but that's a Friday, not the best day for a late afternoon

test), September 22, October 18, November 29 from 5:00-6:15pm in Academic Bldg Room 215.

Objectives: By the end of the course, the student will be able to greet someone in Spanish and convey basic concrete information about topics such as studies, hobbies, and food.  He will be able to participate in simple exchanges with educated native speakers of Spanish.  The methods include formal study of vocabulary and grammar with application to all four areas of language use: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

Note: If you need academic accommodations for a disability, you must go through the process of receiving approved accommodations through the Student Counseling and Disability Services office, Student Center, Room 212, phone – 678-359-5585.

You need to read the syllabus CAREFULLY.  You will find all the information you need for the course here, including how to submit assignments, & I don't accept assignments that are incorrectly submitted.  About 3/4 of the questions I'm asked about the course can be answered with "read the syllabus."

Course expectations and warnings: Taking an online course means that you must be self-motivated.  Students in a regular Spanish 1001 course have a quiz or test almost every day; students in the online course have tests/quizzes/presentations only four days during the semester (except for the small online quizzes that make up 8% of the grade), but they are responsible for and tested over the same material that students in a regular 1001 class are.  For that reason, they must study and learn without the motivation of frequent tests/quizzes.  On a typical on-campus meeting day, students will take a vocabulary test and grammar test and do an oral presentation.  If they wait until the previous night to prepare, they will certainly fail the course.

NEVER, under any circumstances, use an online translator.  You learn nothing, and they usually put out garbage, so I can tell if you’ve used one.  (For the penalty for translator usage, see below).  The best online dictionary, which you are free to use, is http://www.wordreference.com/.

Vocabulary: There are 12 vocabulary lists; you will have a timed quiz over each.  You will find that vocabulary homework is assigned for each of the lists.  The homework is interactive fill-in-the-blank.  You need to do the homework over & over & over again (it loads in a different order every time) until you can do it correctly all the way through without looking at your notes.  THAT'S when you're ready to do the quiz.  Quizzes have a 7-minute time limit.  That's plenty of time to do a quiz if you know the words but definitely not enough time to look all of them up.  There are a number of ways to cheat on those quizzes, I'm sure, but there won't be when you take the vocabulary TESTS on campus.  If you don't learn the words when you take the online quizzes, heaven help you when you have to take them on-campus, when they count more.

Note: Quiz 1 has an 8-minute limit, to allow you to be accustomed to the quizzes.  Also, you may take the first quiz twice, & the higher grade will count, but with all the other quizzes, you get only one attempt.

Pronunciation:  There are four pronunciation assignments.  There is no check-up for those, but if you fail to do them, your pronunciation will be negatively affected.  If you would like for me to evaluate your pronunciation at any time, you may record a dialogue or anything you like and e-mail it to me.

Students are encouraged to practice speaking with others taking a Spanish course or with native speakers.  They should take advantage of on-campus meeting times to spend as much time as possible practicing with classmates before the meeting in order to be better prepared for the oral assignments.

Lessons: All lessons are Power Points on D2L.  It is absolutely essential that you click “download” when you open the Power Points on D2L.  If you look at them in the viewer without downloading them, you won’t see the animated sections, & many of the lessons (& stories, which are also on Power Points) will not make sense.

NOTE: Occasionally links break.  Everything that's on this D2L site can also be found at www.gordonstate.edu/faculty/k_guffey/arriba_1001/list_of_1001_files.htm Save yourself some time & headaches by remembering to come back here to the link if something refuses to work for you on the D2L site.

Assignments:  I will NOT accept late assignments for credit.  Assignments are due by midnight on the day for which they are assigned.  Credit is given for your having the homework done; you get the same amount of credit regardless of how many you miss, so ignore the score that you get at the top of your interactive homework when you click “check.”

There is a dropbox for each assignment.  (The exception is the “Escuchemos” exercises.  Those have “submit” buttons, & the number at the top doesn’t usually match up with the number of the assignment. Hint: if you have a hard time hearing them, try using earbuds.)  What you have to do is do your assignment & then copy & paste it into the comments section of the dropbox.  If you try to save & upload a web page, all that will show up is a blank page.  If your assignment is not interactive, just type it right into the comments area.  Or do it in Word & then copy it, because sometimes things get erased accidentally before you finish.

You also have to attach a file to your submission, because for some reason, the dropboxes won’t accept submissions without attachments.  But BE SURE to paste your assignment into the comments box.

You need to keep a copy of all your assignments, just in case there’s some technical problem.

The link to a grammar assignment (e.g., “Articles and Plurals”) takes you to the presentation of the grammar.  The homework assignment is linked at the end.  There’s also a link for all homework in the module.  Either manner of accessing the homework is fine.  Also, you only have to submit the exercise at the end of the Power Point, not those that occur within it.

All you really need the textbook for is homework; I've written Power Points for you over everything you need to learn, but you can use the text to supplement or clarify. Every time you see a "p.," that's a textbook assignment. I don't care what edition of the book you use; use the cheapest you can get your hands on. If the pages don't match up, find an exercise on a nearby page that's over the material on the Power Point.

All composition assignments are to be in Spanish.

Cheating: You are expected to do your own assignments.  Failure to do so will result in your being unprepared for tests.  During tests, if you cheat, you will receive a 0 on that quiz or test.  You may also be expelled from the course or receive an F in the course, actions that are at the discretion of the instructor and the department chair.  If you cheat on a mid-term or final exam, you will receive an F in the course.

Dropping the class: Anyone wishing to drop any class must do so by October 3.  Failure to do so will result in a grade of WF if the student ceases to turn in assignments and/or attend the required on-campus meetings.

Communication: It’s much easier to reach me by e-mail than by phone.  I use my Gordon e-mail address as my personal e-mail address, so you’ll probably get a faster response if you send a message to k_guffey@gordonstate.edu than if you use Desire2Learn.  Normally, I respond within 24 hours (usually much faster than that) if you e-mail me. However, response time may be longer on the weekends or during fall break or Thanksgiving break.

Students may view their grades at any time on D2L.  The final grade displayed for each student is the average of all assignments/tests completed & does not take into account future assignments (such as the final exam).

IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  First, remember to DOWNLOAD the Power Points.  Then, when viewing a Power Point slide show, click on the third icon on the bottom right after opening the show.  This will allow you to view the show with all its little “tricks.”  Things appear in a different order that way, the order in which you need to view them to really understand what’s going on.  You HAVE to view it this way.

Reminder: If at any time a link fails to open, you can also find all materials at http://faculty.gordonstate.edu/k_guffey/arriba_1001/list_of_1001_files.htm.

THESE LINKS WILL NOT WORK UNLESS YOU DOWNLOAD THIS DOCUMENT!!!

If you click on a link from your D2L/Brightspace page, you’ll just get blank space.
