Advising: FAQs

I need a general overview of advising; where can I find it?

Gordon offers an outline of advising here.

What is Highlander Registration?

Highlander Registration is a tool to help you locate classes that fit your busy schedule.  More information about this tool can be located here.

Can you unlock me so that I can self-register?

Absolutely!  First, however, we must have a discussion before I can unlock you.  You can either visit me during office hours or email me.  Email me with the following information so that we can begin the necessary conversation--and get you registered as soon as possible:

  • your progress in your current courses;
  • if you are experiencing difficulties in your courses,
  • what is your plan to succeed in them; and,
  • what courses do you plan to enroll in for the following semester(s)?

How do I figure out what courses that I need to take?

You have several wonderful resources at Gordon, including  your advisor (me).  First, though, look at DegreeWorks.  You will see a list of courses that have been applied to your major and what courses you need to take in order to complete your degree.  You will also see options such as "What if?"  You can experiment with how your coursework would change if you switched your major.

I don't like DegreeWorks--is there another way to figure out what classes I need to take?

Of course!  Advisement Worksheets are available from the appropriate department.

I cannot seem to register for a class that I want; why am I experiencing a problem?

First, make sure that you have fulfilled all prerequisites for the course; prerequisites are classes that are required in order to advance to another class.  Prerequisites help you be successful in each course that you undertake.

Next, see if one of your already scheduled courses conflicts with the time of the course that you are seeking to add.

If you are unable to register any courses, you may be locked or have a "hold" on your account; check your account status on BannerWeb.

What is the "Withdrawal Passing" deadline?

The "Withdrawal Passing" deadline is generally midterm for the course; it is the deadline to withdraw from any course while receiving a "WP" grade.  Withdrawals after this deadline will be marked as a "Withdrawal Failing" grade.  More information about withdrawals can be found here.

I need advice!  I do not know what to major to choose; I do not know what to do in a course--and I feel like I am failing!  What do I do?!  Help!

If you have any type of academic questions, feel free to visit me during office hours.  I will be happy to help!
