Annotated bibliography (25 points) The writer identifies each author’s thesis and main points in the annotations.  In addition, each annotation contains an evaluation of the source's credibility.  The annotated bibliography also complies with M.L.A. style guidelines as presented in class. 

M.L.A. format and documentation (20 points) The writer uses M.L.A. style citation throughout the body of the paper and any direct quotes are integrated into the writer's own sentences. (See attachment to the syllabus.)

Academic Language Conventions and Style (30 points) The writer uses only Standard American English, avoiding the major grammar errors and inappropriate features outlined in the attachment to the syllabus. The writer also chooses words carefully for rhetorical effect.  In addition, the writer demonstrates careful revision through mature diction, sentence variation, thoughtful phrasing, the avoidance of the passive voice, and the appropriate use of transitions.

Research question (15 points) The writer’s research question is both significant and focused.  Additionally, the writer has phrased the question properly as a statement in the introductory paragraph.

Introduction and conclusion (20 points) The introduction gives appropriate, focused background information for the research question.  Furthermore, the conclusion does not merely sum up the writer’s points, but includes an evaluation of the possible answers to his or her research question.

Detailed development, analysis, and evaluation of possible answers to the writer’s research question (80 points) The writer does not merely relay information, but he or she analyzes and evaluates the possible answers to his or her research question in light of his or her own thoughts in conjunction with an exploration of other possible answers.
