Course Description:
The private, one–on-one study of a
musical instrument has long been held as the center of a
music major’s musical growth. The
applied lessons seek to help each student grow as a performer and in his or her
understanding of music.
Lessons and Practice:
Room 111 is the Recording Studio and Marimba
room. Non-majors are not to use this
room without the permission of Dr. Boumpani.
Please be respectful of nearby classes when practicing on loud instruments.
You may also use the chorus room when not in use, or take a snare and pad into
a practice room.
Text:
Books will be assigned by the teacher and provided by the student within 10 days of
instructor notification. These books are
not always found in our bookstore due to their specialized nature. They are, however, easily found online. If you have problems finding a text – see Dr.
Boumpani immediately. The main mallet
and snare drum books are always carried in the bookstore.
Materials:
At least 2 pairs of drum sticks, one pair of medium mallets,
assigned books and a 3-ring binder for instructor handouts.
Grading (music majors):
The grading is broken up as follows:
(1) 50% of your grade will be based on week to week progress based on your practice as determined by your teacher, 20%
on one successful student recital, and (2) 30% will be based on your
performance jury at the end of the semester.
PRACTICE ELEMENT: If you are not
practicing on a regular basis, your grade will be affected. If you fail your applied lessons for any 2
semesters, you will be out of the program.
Grading (non-music majors):
Your grade will be based on your week to week progress on
the assigned work. Non-music majors are
allowed applied study only at the discretion of the instructor, depending on
his schedule.
Grading Scale: A 90 to 100
B 80 to 89
C 70 to 79
D 60 to 69
F Below 60
Any student needing extra help should see me. I am willing to work
with any student on a one-to-one basis whenever necessary.
Attendance policies:
Attendance - Attendance is
required. Since this is the heart of
your music study, PLEASE be on time and at all lessons. If you need to change it, see the instructor
ahead of time to work it out.
Academic Honor Code:
Students are
expected to uphold the “Student Code of Conduct” in the Gordon College Catalog.
