Course Description:

The Gordon Band offers Gordon College students the opportunity to perform music written specifically and solely for band and perform at least once a semester.  It is open to all Gordon students, but required of all instrumental music majors.  The only requirement for non music majors is to be able to read music.  A high school band background is helpful.

Course Goals:

The goals are to introduce students to good quality band music, teach them all of the fine points of performance including dynamics, intonation, articulations, etc.  The rehearsals will lead to concerts where the students will have the opportunity to perform.  For music majors this course will also give them insights into rehearsing an ensemble and working with students who are majors and students who are not.

Student Learning Outcomes

Through the rehearsal and performance of music, students will:

1.     Raise the level of their overall musicianship. This includes all of the fine points of performance including, intonation, phrasing, articulation, balance, and accurate rhythm reading, and more.

2.     Gain an appreciation of the various styles of music written for concert bands.

3.     Students are challenged to stretch their talents and abilities by working on music that is challenging.

4.     Music majors will learn different approaches to rehearsing large and small ensembles.

TEXT: Music provided

MATERIALS: Instrument, pencil, and a good attitude!  Note larger instruments and percussion instruments may be provided by the school.

Grading:

Performance: The concert is a large part of the grade. If there is only one performance in a semester, that will be 100% of your grade.  You must attend all concerts.

Attendance – all students must make all rehearsals (see below).

Performance Attire:  All students are required to have the following proper attire for the performances
:

Men: black dress pants, white shirt, dark tie, black shoes and sox.

Women: Black and white dress, or dress ensemble.

NO  jeans, sneakers, sandals, flip flops, t shirts, etc. Anyone arriving without the
proper dress may be excluded from the concert and will receive a failing grade for the class
.

Assessment: non-majors: There is no formal “testing” in the musical ensemble.  You will be graded on rehearsal attendance and concert attendance.

Assessment: music majors:   You will be tested on your music prior to each concert.  You are expected to know your music and perform it musically in all of your ensembles.

Grading Scale:    A       90 to 100

                             B       80 to 89

                             C       70 to 79

                             D       60 to 69

                             F       Below 60

Attendance:         Attendance is required.  Since our rehearsals are only a week – everyone’s attendance is required.  You are allowed one (1) unexcused absence without penalty.  Beginning with the second absence, 3 points will be deducted from your final average for each absence.    If you know you are going to be absent, please inform Dr. Boumpani ahead of time AND return with proper documentation (doctor’s note, etc.)

BEING LATE:  Gordon students should never be late – especially if you live on campus!
LEAVING EARLY: Students leaving early without prior excuse (must be in verified) will not be counted present for that day.  Therefore: if you are taking this course for credit, you must be on time.  Being on time means:

Being in your seat, with your instrument out, warmed up and with your music in order. For percussionists this means having ALL of the drums and percussion equipment set up and ready for all the music on the rehearsal list before 6:00 PM.

Walking through the door 1 minute before rehearsal begins is not being on time.  If you have a conflict that will cause you to be late, please see Dr. Boumpani as soon as possible. If you have problems being on time, or you feel you have to make some kind of philosophical or political statement by being late, then please drop band now.  If I believe that you are constantly late for no reason, I may not allow you to perform and you will fail.

Academic Honor Code:

Students are expected to uphold the “Student Code of Conduct” in the Gordon College Catalog.  I expect you to do your own work at all time.

Religious Holidays

If a student must miss class due to the observance of a religious holiday, that absence may be excused. To be excused, the student must inform his/her instructors before the absence and make alternate arrangements for any work due at the time of the absence. An excused absence for the observance of a religious holiday does not excuse student from responsibility for required course work.
