TEXTBOOK: Artforms by Duane and Sarah Preble and Patrick Frank ( 8th edition).

CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION: Introduction to the meaning and importance of the visual arts.  The course includes slide lectures, videos, demonstrations and related creative projects.

COURSE CONTENT: This course will explore the meaning of art and its place in our culture as well as the cultures of the past.  The student will explore the elements and principles of design and the various media by which they are employed.  Various related projects will be done by the student to aid in an introduction to the handling of art materials.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:   (1) To give the student a general understanding of the visual arts by defining their parameters and the principles and elements that underlie them.  (2) To familiarize the student with art as a part of everyday life.  (3) To provide the student with a vocabulary of art terms and techniques.  (4) To familiarize the student with art history and the great masters of the visual arts.  (5) To encourage interest in an individual exploration of the arts both past and present, through research and reading.

METHODS OF INSTRUCTION: (1) Lectures (2) Videos (3) Slide presentations (4) Demonstrations of art techniques (5) Student participation through discussion and assignments.

EVALUATION: The grade given in this class will be an accumulation of points from the tests given and the projects assigned.  Projects will be given a point value and averaged with the tests which also have a point value.  There will be an anticipated 5 tests and two graded projects. The final will not be a comprehensive exam.  The class may be graded on a curve by using the highest point total in the class as the standard against which the rest of the students will be evaluated.  Percentage increments will then determine your final grade (90% or above = A, 80% = B, 70% = C, etc.).  Please take notes on everything written on the board and anticipate test questions from your notes.  Extra credit opportunities may be made available.

ATTENDANCE:   Regular and punctual attendance is required.  Students wishing to drop a class for any reason should report to the registrars office for an official drop of the class.  More than 3 absences will be an automatic 20 point reduction in grade.  More than 5 absences after the official add drop period will be an automatic failure.  Three tardies will count as an absence.  Absent is absent so I don’t accept doctor’s notes, police reports, or grandparents’ obituaries or anything else.  I am not in a position to judge what exactly is a “valid” reason for missing class.

If you find yourself falling asleep in class, please prop yourself up.  Laying across your desk will be a 5 point deduction from your grade.  Your pictures are on the internet.    Five points will be deducted from your grade for any unexplained exits from the classroom before the end of class.

SPECIAL NEEDS STUDENT:  If you need academic accommodations for a disability, you must first see Ms. Kristina Henderson, Student Counselor, in the Student Center (second floor).  Her telephone number is 678-359-5585.

OFFICE HOURS: The office hours of the instructor will be posted on his office door.  The instructor will be available for student counseling during office hours or by appointment.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY POLICY: Plagiarism (the presentation of someone else’s work as one’s own) and cheating (dishonesty or deception in fulfilling academic requirements) will not be tolerated.  Any act of academic dishonesty by a student may result in a grade of F for the relevant assignment.

ARTIST REPORT: (30 points) Students will be required to report on an artist of their choice from a list posted in the classroom or an unlisted artist approved by the instructor.  This report must be from 3-5 full pages of text in length and done on a word processor.  Double space your report and use “Times New Roman” 12 point type (the type used here).  Please give biographical information and indicate something about the movement or style the artist was associated with and the importance of his work to it.  You must use three sources in addition to any textbook biographies, if there are any in the text on your artist.  One of them must be a library book.  State your exact sources in a bibliography at the end of the paper.  No bibliography no points! If you give me an internet address please make sure it is correct so that I can pull it up on my PC.  If I cannot do that with the address given, I have to assume that you may be hiding something and will have to deduct points. Any direct quotes must be put in quotation marks.  No Plagiarism!

Can’t find an artist? Try “Artrenewal.org”.

Papers less that three full pages will have points deducted.  Papers will be graded on your following of directions (correct type, length, bibliography) and the paper’s readability (grammar, punctuation and appropriateness).

Papers received after the due date will receive half credit.  No reports will be accepted beyond one week past the due date.

GRADED DRAWING PROJECT: (10 points) You will be asked to do a self portrait in the mirror after having been instructed in class on how to do it.  These drawing are less than 5% of your grade and are graded mostly on following of instructions and the amount of effort put into them.  They should be life size (approximately 8” in height), be proportionally correct, and have modeling or shading to indicate form.  These drawings are graded subjectively as are all art projects.
