Instructions for finding out your GALILEO Password and your PIN number
To use the GALILEO databases
off campus, you must have your GALILEO password.
I. GALILEO Password
To find out your GALILEO
password go to Gordon College’s online library catalog at http://gilfind.gordonstate.edu. Look in the right side of the screen for Access my GIL Account: and click on Get GALILEO Password. When the next screen appears, type your
barcode number from the back of your student ID or your 929 # (institution ID)
in the first box, your last name in the second box and your PIN number in the
third box. Click on Login and the screen will change to give your profile information
and the GALILEO password. Please be sure
to click on Logout after you find
out your password.
II. PIN number
To find out your PIN number,
click on Access my GIL Account and
enter your barcode number or your
929
(Institution ID) number in the box. Enter your last name and click on Get my PIN. A temporary PIN number will be sent to your
Gordon College email account. Once you
have your temporary PIN number, change it by going to your online record and
clicking on the blue Change PIN button.
IV.ADVANCED SEARCHING OF
ACADEMIC SEARCH COMPLETE
1 Once the Basic Search screen appears, click
on Advanced Search. Type your search term or terms in the
boxes.
2. If you want to limit your search to a
specific journal or magazine title, type the title in one of the boxes and
change Select a Field (optional)
to SO Journal name. For example if you wanted to find an article
on the invasive plant cogongrass in the July 2, 2008
issue of Southeast Farm Press you might set up your search in the following
way: Type the term or terms in the first
and second boxes. In the third box type
the title of the magazine or journal and change Select a Field (optional) to SO
Journal name.
3. Under Search options and Search modes you may
want to limit your search in different ways.
We suggest that you use some of the following ways:
A.) Document
Type – Highlight Article so that the database will only look for fact
filled articles.
B.) Language
– Highlight English
C.) Published
Date from – Enter the month and years by which you want to limit your
search results.
Once all limiters are in
place, click on the Search button.
4. When the
results list appears, look to the left of the results and scroll down to find a
list of possible subject headings
(Subject: Thesaurus Term and Subject)
to narrow the search results. One of the following icons indicates articles
in full text:
1. HTML Full
Text – text but no graphics
2. PDF (portable
document format) Full Text – photograph of each page as it appeared in the
magazine.
5. PRINTING: Do not use the File ŕ Print in the
upper left hand corner or the printer symbol at the top of the screen.
To
print a HTML article, first make sure that the article is on the screen
and click on the printer symbol to the right of the article. To print a PDF article, move your cursor
over the article page to make the grey oval appear; click on the printer symbol
to get the article. Follow the rest of
the instructions to send it to the printer.
Once the article is printed, click on Back or Result List. The results list will reappear on the screen
and you can continue looking at other articles.
MAKE SURE YOU PUT ON THE PRINTOUT ALL THE
INFORMATION NECESSARY TO INCLUDE IT IN A WORKS CITED OR BIBLIOGRAPHY PAGE.
6. The results list will also contain one other icon – Find It. This means the article is not available in
this database but GALILEO will look
to see if it is available in another database.
7. Above or
below the citation icon is a Folder symbol.
Click on the folder symbol to store useful citations in a folder. Click on Folder view
to see the citations.
The folder has the three following options:
PRINTING - PDF citations require printing
individually. HTML citations may be
printed individually or together with the folder list.
***EMAILING - This will allow you to send
everything (citation, full text, PDF) so long as any boxes under Include when sending: are checked. The
citation list and HTML text of the articles will be contained in one email
while each PDF article will be in a separate email as an attachment.
SAVING – Click on the disk symbol and follow the instructions
to save to a disk.
Click on Back and then click on Back
again to return to the Result List screen.
8. When finished searching click on the Return to GALILEO link in the
right hand corner to return to the Databases A-Z screen.
V. ADVANCED SEARCHING OF
JSTOR LIFE SCIENCES - Keep in mind that the JSTOR databases are only available on campus.
1 Once the Basic Search screen appears, click
on the Advanced Search under the
Search box. Type search terms in the two
boxes. For example type Dolphins in the first box. Uncheck the
Include links to external content box.
2. Look in the Narrow by: box, set Language to
English and click on Search. The results list will appear on the
screen. If your search results in a
large number of results, look through some of the articles to see if you pick
out any other key search terms such as the scientific name for a plant, animal,
etc. Click on Modify Search to return to the Search screen.
3. Type other search terms,
such as Tursiops, in the second box. Once you have all your search terms in the
boxes and limiters in place click on Search
again. The results list should
reappear. Scroll through to find the
articles of interest to you.
4. To see the article click on the PDF link and a
window will appear on the screen saying the following: Your use of the JSTOR
Archive
indicates your acceptance of JSTOR’s Terms and Conditions. Click on Accept
JSTOR’s Terms and Conditions and proceed to PDF; the
article will appear on the screen.
5. Printing an article - To print a PDF
article, move your cursor over the article page to make the grey oval
appear; click on the printer symbol to get the article. Follow the rest of the
instructions to send it to the printer.
Do not
use the File ŕ Print in the
upper left hand corner or the printer symbol at the top of the screen.
Once the article is printed, click on the X in the
upper right corner. The results list
will reappear on the screen so that you may
continue looking at other articles.
6. ***Emailing
an article – We recommend emailing articles so that you don’t have to redo
your research. To email articles
make the grey oval appear on the screen and click on the
Adobe Acrobat symbol on the right side of the oval. The article will
reappear with an envelope.
Click on the envelope and then the Attach link. When the window appears asking how you would
like
to email the document, click on Send copy. An email will
appear on the screen with the article attached.
Type an email address in
the TO: box and click on Send. The email will contain the article as well as
the bibliographical information necessary for citing it
in a bibliography.
7. When finished searching, click on the Back button until it returns to the
GALILEO database page or click on the X in
the
upper right hand corner to exit off of the Internet
entirely.
