Fill in the FIRST blank with the correct form of the PRETERITE or the IMPERFECT. If you want to check and see if you're using the right tense, put P (preterit) or I (imperfect) in the second blank.

Remember just to read the story in English once to know what's going on. Don't keep referring back to it, or you'll never learn to use the tenses in Spanish. Remember, on the test, you WON'T have an English text to refer back to, so read the English and then forget that the English translation is there.

When I was 12, I lived with my two sisters and my parents in Fresno, where I attended a private school. My father worked at the Bank of America, and my mother stayed at home
Once my parents traveled to Europe. My sisters and I stayed with our grandmother. Everything was going fine until one Saturday afternoon my sister broke her nose. When my parents found out about the accident, they wanted to return, but my grandmother told them that it wasn't necessary because my sister was fine.

Cuando yo (tener) doce años, (vivir--to live) con mis dos hermanas y mis padres en Fresno, donde yo (asistir) a una escuela privada. Mi papá I (trabajar) en el Banco de America y mi mamá se (quedar--to stay) en casa.
Una vez (once) mis padres (viajar--to travel) a Europa. Mis hermanas y yo nos (quedar) con nuestra abuela. Todo (ir) bien hasta que un sábado por la tarde mi hermana menor se (romper--to break) la nariz (nose). Cuando mis padres (saber) del accidente, ellos (querer) volver, pero mi abuela les (decir) que no era necesario porque mi hermana (estar) bien.

Last Monday, when Jorge woke up, he said that he wasn't feelign well. He hadn't been able to sleep all night, and his chest was hurting. Immediately he made an appointment with the doctor. He was very nervous because he was afraid it was something serious, like a heart attack. The doctor examined him and told him that it wasn't anything serious, that he was just very tired. The doctor gave him some vitamins and sleeping pills. And when Jorge arrived home, he was already feeling much better.

El lunes pasado, cuando Jorge se (despertar), (decir) que no se (sentir) bien. No pudo dormir toda la noche y le (doler--to hurt) el pecho. Inmediatamente el (hacer) una cita (appointment) con el médico. Estaba muy nervioso porque el
